PM Modi Praises Pilot Smit Machchhar for Saving 174 Lives in Israel-Bound Flight Incident
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday praised Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian flydubai pilot who helped prevent an alleged attempt to crash an Israel-bound flight after being attacked by his co-pilot.
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children. During the flight, Machchhar was reportedly stabbed and seriously injured by his co-pilot.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and other crew members to enter and restrain the attacker. The aircraft made an emergency diversion and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
PM Modi speaks with Captain Machchhar
Modi spoke with Machchhar through a video call while the pilot was receiving treatment in the UAE. The Prime Minister praised his courage, composure and quick decision-making, saying his actions helped save numerous lives.
During the conversation, Machchhar explained that his 17 years of flying experience, including 11 years as a captain, helped him recognize that the aircraft was rapidly descending and that he needed to act immediately. He told Modi that despite being badly injured, he pushed himself to open the cockpit door.
Machchhar also said that he drew spiritual strength from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa during the crisis.
International recognition
Captain Machchhar’s actions have received international attention. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised him, saying his actions prevented a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
The Israeli Consulate General in Mumbai also publicly honored Machchhar, calling him a hero and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Captain Machchhar is continuing his recovery after sustaining serious injuries in the attack. The circumstances and motive behind the alleged co-pilot attack remain under investigation.
